I was out just playing around in the open areas off of Jacks Valley Rd. Getting out on the trail before sunrise always brings the possibility of catching the wonderful light that can happen during early morning. I scrambled to find some composition that might work before the color was lost, I shot two compositions before the light changed, I liked this one the best. We intered the Sierra via Kearsarge Pass, our first day brought us to a campsite below Glen Pass. Sunset rendered some nice alpenglow to a tarn just below the pass, a short painful sprint to get to the best location for shooting brought some nice results. The next morning we were over the pass and on to 60 Lakes Basin. It's no wonder why it was named with all the lakes around, we had some wonderful views of Mt Clarence King and Mt Cotter and Fin Dome. Rae Lakes was our final destination for our trip, and then back out over Glen and Kearsarge Passes. http://www.jefflockphotography.com/rocky-ridge-garrapata-state-park https://images.on-this.website/10499_4851876854c313514cc1f8.jpgRocky Ridge, Garrapata State Park Having the chance to live in Santa Cruz for a number of years brought plenty of wonderful bike rides and of coarse, lots of great hiking and photography. I made a number of trips down to Big Sur, one of my favorite areas was Garrapata State Park which lies just south of Carmel Highlands. The Rocky Ridge trail had plenty of challenges as well as great views. From this point you can see all the way from Point Sur to the Monterey Peninsula and beyond to the Santa Cruz Mountains. The trail is around 3.5 miles with and average of 19% grade for the 1450'gain to the top. At the top there's a bench that I have had lunch a number of times, on a foggy day you are above the marine layer overlooking a sea of fog, with warm sunny conditions at the high point. If you've been back to the lakes during spring it can be amazing. As we arrived at Lower Cathedral Lake we had been watching the Lenticular Clouds building and decided that upper lake was the place to be. We just short of sprinted to get to the lake. If you've been out with me when Mother Nature is exposing her wonder, I turn into a 10 year old boy. It has taken me years to try to manage the excitement and concentrate on what I need to do with the camera. The winds and clouds developed early. I thought I had a good chance to turn out some nice landscapes at a spot I go to shoot clouds. Here is what I came up with. They were telling me about how amazing the wildflowers, birding and the Mono Craters were. I continue to be so grateful that I live in Northern Nevada and can travel Hwy 395 almost at random on a normal year. This image was shot during sunrise at the South Tufa. Our trip to the North Coast was short, but I had some good opportunity with a front going through the area. This location may not exist due to the construction of the Hwy 395 bypass. I happy with the bypass, if you have ever crossed four lanes of traffic moving in opposite directions at 55+ mph it can be a bit nerve-racking. The shot is looking south towards Carson Valley. These were selected for their amazing display of light. I shot this image at Crown Lake in Hoover Wilderness back in 2002. I recall getting up a few hours before sunrise by the light of the full moon and scouting a composition that might work. My plan was to capture the moonset during the time of the morning us photographers call " The Magic Hour ". Sawtooth Ridge can be seen from Hwy 395 as one drives through Bridgeport California. The ridge is spectacular from any angle.Finding this location, I was hopeful that the sunset would bring some nice color to the mostly cloudless sky. Everyone knows how much I love the drive and photography down Hwy 395 from Reno. This shot is an example of the light during Magic Hour. It's no wonder why it's called that. Our plan was to go over Taboose Pass and make camp on the west side of the crest. The wind was blowing hard and brought in clouds that were threatning rain and possibly snow. The evening lit up with some nice clouds and God beams.
